{"id":248,"date":"2011-01-06T07:21:41","date_gmt":"2011-01-06T19:21:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/foliodeux.com\/wordpress\/?p=248"},"modified":"2011-01-06T07:23:50","modified_gmt":"2011-01-06T19:23:50","slug":"reading-the-constitution-and-mark-twain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/foliodeux.com\/wordpress\/?p=248","title":{"rendered":"Reading the Constitution &#038; Mark Twain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This morning, FD listened to the House of Representatives reading the US Constitution. \u00a0Or so they said. \u00a0Actually, the house read a version of the document, leaving out things they didn&#8217;t want to read, including both the 18th and 21st amendments (those that adopted and then repealed Prohibition) and the &#8220;3\/5ths clause&#8221; and so on. \u00a0The argument made was that portions of the document that had been changed are no longer part of the document. \u00a0But that doesn&#8217;t seem true. \u00a0The wording of various amendments does not say &#8220;we strike out&#8221; X or Y. \u00a0The document is not a\u00a0palimpsest &#8212; the original words haven&#8217;t been scraped off. \u00a0If you want to read and understand the Constitution, you need to read it all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Today&#8217;s reading wasn&#8217;t rehearsed, as far as FD could tell, and readers didn&#8217;t seem to have gotten clear instructions. \u00a0There wasn&#8217;t consistency in whether or not readers read all of the material (some amendment readers included dates of proposals and adoption, some did not) and the division of the readings was a bit weird &#8212; some readers didn&#8217;t even get to complete a sentence, just some phrases, which made for some strange sound bites.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Similarly, a recent decision to issue a version of <em>Huckleberry Finn <\/em>that makes changes to the wording of that novel seems also to ignore historical accuracy. \u00a0When is that a good idea?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This morning, FD listened to the House of Representatives reading the US Constitution. \u00a0Or so they said. \u00a0Actually, the house read a version of the document, leaving out things they didn&#8217;t want to read, including both the 18th and 21st amendments (those that adopted and then repealed Prohibition) and the &#8220;3\/5ths clause&#8221; and so on.
